American League
Championship Series
Game 4
Yanks - 9
Boston - 2

BOSTON - A day after Pedro Martinez threw seven
shutout innings and
Boston handed the New York Yankees an historic defeat, Red Sox
right-hander Bret Saberhagen's bungled throw allowed the go-ahead run
to score in the fourth inning of the Yankees' 9-2 American League
Championship Series Game 5 win. The Red Sox made three other errors
before Ricky Ledee's ninth-inning grand slam Sunday as the Yankees
seized a 3-1 lead in the best-of-7 ALCS. Andy Pettitte allowed two runs
over 7 1/3 innings, eventually improving to 2-0 lifetime in the postseason,
before the Red Sox and their fans became enraged in the eighth with New
York clinging to a 3-2 lead. Second-base umpire Tim Tschida called
Boston's Jose Offerman out after Yanks second baseman Chuck
Knoblauch tried to tag Offerman and missed as Offerman was trying to
advance to second base on John Valentin's one-out grounder. An inning
later, after Boston's Nomar Garciaparra was called out on a close play at
first base, the game was stopped and manager Jimy Williams was ejected
for arguing the call. Fans at Fenway Park then threw bottles and other
objects on the field, causing the Yankees to go back to the dugout for
several minutes. - USA Today
